Zambia ranks as one of the poorer countries in the world. It is reported that approximately 86% of the population live in dire poverty and Aids has orphaned over 500,000 children. The children live in huge, and often inadequate, extended families: or in very basic orphanages: or they have to survive, or die, on their own. Giving the pupils a small amount of extra food is an important part of the programme.
