If they are fortunate enough to be in reach of a government school and also have the £12 - £20 fees for the term and money to buy a uniform and exercise books, they can take part in some pretty poor education, which seems to be mainly rote learning and copying laboriously from text books.

Most schools manage classes of 60 to 90 children and many have to run 3 sessions a day. So, children as young as 5 years, can walk several kilometers to get to school for a 2 hour ‘educational’ session before returning home – and that is usually with no food. The children are also often needed for manual labour, such as fetching water for the school or carrying mud bricks for further building. Many schools have no toilet facilities.
